Tour Location
In the island’s heartland, before you arrive in Halki, you notice on your left the hill of Apano Kastro. It stands at an altitude of 420 m thus it has an excellent view to the west and south coastal line of the island. The castle’s location proves that it was a focal point of the central Naxos as it was a fortress to guard the area from intruders coming from the sea. The area suffered from the pirate raids and the castle was abandoned by its Venetian lords, who moved to the castle in town and the area never became a settlement for the local population.
